Forever Evergreen
As the old saying goes, “misery loves company” and in the case of camouflaged cellular towers, more company could really help hide the visual misery. That’s not always possible in regions where real trees are few and far between: like southern Nevada, where Flickr member Tony Webster captured the “Hidden Cell Tower Tree” above. The photographer’s sarcasm-fu was flowing strong that February day in 2012.
Pricks Or It Didn’t Happen
To paraphrase Sigmund Freud, sometimes a saguaro is just a saguaro. Times change, Sig, so welcome to OUR world where some saguaros are very much NOT what they seem! Flickr member FolsomNatural‘s photo from early 2014 illustrates what happens when a desert utilities contractor says “the heck with it, we’re doing cacti”, and actually follows through.
Hard Cell
Cacti aren’t the only options for desert regions, provided the area already has a few date palms to copy. While the quality of the imitation is open to interpretation, we’re confident in stating the “trunk” is almost a perfect color match to the barren hills beyond. Flickr member miheco‘s photo above dates (pun unintended) from December of 2006 and was taken in the Temescal Valley near Corona, CA.
Double Trouble
Beauty (or the lack thereof) may be only skin-deep but money is the “root” of all evil. We’re not quite sure what this mixed-metaphor mashup means but this much is true: it’s cheaper to build one double-topped cellular tower tree than it is to construct two single-topped microwave masts. Given that the latter don’t look all that convincing, why not save a buck or two? The savings will surely be passed down to customers, right? Right?? In March of 2007, Flickr member The Pug Father captured the ungainly twin-topped-tower above looming over (now a little less) lovely Dublin, OH.
Cairo Factor
It’s kinda like Fear Factor, only you watch it with your mummy. OK, that was bad but the supersized solitary cellular tower above may be worse. Stridently sticking up perfectly straight and tall, this ridiculously symmetrical microwave mast mocks the entire concept of camouflage as it looms over the timeless desert sands on the road to Alexandria, Egypt. Flickr member Dan Lundberg couldn’t help noticing it (through the window of a speeding bus, no less) as he was being transported along the highway. Post haste, indeed.
