Sustainability, Step Buy Step
All well and good but as the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Let’s take a closer look at exactly how Ocean Sole is reducing flip-flop pollution, locally and globally. First off, the raw materials must be hand-collected from their resting places on the seashore. After being thoroughly washed to remove dirt and debris, the flip-flops are segregated by their colors. To produce larger works, the cleaned flip-flops are compressed into solid blocks ready to be carved – “sculpted” might be a more accurate description.
After the blocks are carved and the desired design is set, the surfaces are sanded down to eliminate rough edges and bring out the figure’s overall shape and form. Next comes labeling and packaging. Last but not least, the finished products are shipped to their respective markets across the globe.
Prices vary and are based on the size, type and complexity of the piece. Some of the more unique figures have sold for as much as $10,000! Not bad for an agglomeration of trashed beach sandals, huh?
