Dome Base: UAE’s Biodomes Wildlife Conservation Center

With environmental concerns placed at the forefront, Baharash Architecture came up with an innovative design concept that features a trio of interconnected though self-sustaining biodomes. The honeycomb-roofed structures will be assembled from prefabricated components so as to minimize disruption while at the same time allowing quick and uncomplicated on-site assembly.

The Al-Hajar Mountains are located in the eastern part of the United Arab Emirates, reaching their peak height (no pun intended) 3,009 m (9,872 ft) above sea level at Jebel Shams. They are the highest mountain range in the eastern Arabian peninsula, looming over the low coastal plains roughly 50–100 km (31–62 miles) inland from the Gulf of Oman. Though the local micro-climate is notably cooler than the surrounding desert plains and plateaus, The Biodomes employs a semi-subterranean typology to provide passive cooling benefits while maintaining visual harmony with nature.

Inside The Biodomes, visitors will appreciate the bioclimatic indoor environments and the restorative, therapeutic benefits they provide. The effort to become one with the environment offers other benefits as well. “The design provides visitors with a unique experience and a sense of being outside in nature,” according to Baharash Architecture. “Visitors will also enjoy organic local cuisine in the restaurant which offers amazing views of the beautiful landscape.”
