Isle Go: Floating Islands Buoy Copenhagen Harbor

The Studio Fokstrot team has elaborated an expanded vision that goes beyond “Copenhagen Islands”. At press time they were hard at work on a range of other harbor projects such as a floating fish market and a floating cabin. The latter is a first step towards “re-imagining the relationship between cities and the sea in a time of rapid urban development and sea level rise.” That’s the good thing about floating islands – if the sea level should rise, they rise along with it.

Although CPH-01 is an artificial floating island, its natural components have a limited lifespan due to their material make-up and the ever-changing environment of Copenhagen Harbor. Estimates from Studio Fokstrot indicate the island should last about a year before significant repairs and structural remediation may be necessary. Not that this is a bad thing… new islands are expected to replace old ones and the ongoing work will help support Copenhagen’s skilled craftspeople as time goes on.

Giving credit where credit is due, we should state that the prototype CPH-01 floating island was constructed with the support of Konstfonden and Havnekultur 365. Additional assistance and contributions were provided by SITAS (Scandinavian Instant trees), Susens Bådbyggeri, and Syddjurs Savverk.
