The flat-packed Surf Shack from Backcountry Hut Company (BHC) is an off-grid dwelling that can be delivered anywhere by helicopter and assembled on-site.
Backcountry Hut Company (BHC) of British Columbia, Canada was established in 2015 with the mission of creating a turnkey housing solution that takes the time-honored concept of the wilderness survival shelter to the next level. Company principals and co-founders Wilson Edgar and Michael Leckie were inspired by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad, who made a name (and built a business) on modular, easy to assemble, customizable and above all sustainable principles.
The result is the Surf Shack, available in Frontcountry and Backcountry options designed to be placed virtually anywhere – though it helps to have a helicopter or the means to procure one. Flat-packed for shipping convenience like so many IKEA items, the Surf Shack’s exterior structural components are pre-assembled by BHC and can be built up in modules. Prices begin at £34,000 ($45,750) for a single, basic module encompassing 191 sq ft of living space.
Quaint and evocative name aside, the Surf Shack is designed with luxury in mind. With that said, interior fixtures and décor are left to the discretion of the customer though BHC allows the option of selecting from several specified interior designs. The examples shown above would certainly impress any Big Kahuna whether the location is seaside or mountainside.
