Sustainable Mini-City to be Built at South Korean Airport

The top-ranked airport in the world, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, will soon get even better as an incredible vision for a sustainable mini-city comes to completion. The new Terminal 2 will have vast tracts of beautiful gardens, luxury shopping, a golf course and even an indoor ice skating rink.

Designed by architecture firm Gensler, the new construction will be a green update to the old terminal. Sustainable strategies are a key focus, including natural ventilation, daylighting, and a large-scale installation of solar panels.

Outdoor features like waterfalls, additional gardens and ‘luxury lifestyle centers’ will help make the 7.4-million-square-foot terminal even more of an attraction than it already is. It’s expected to be completed in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The overall look of the airport terminal is bio-inspired, designed in the shape of the phoenix, a mythical beast with its origins in Korean lore.
