Sun and Cloud: Hand-Cranked Solar Digital Camera

A new Instagram-inspired digital camera doesn’t just come with 15 built-in filters to give photos a vintage look or add special effects – it’s also powered by either the sun, or the motion of your hand. The Sun and Cloud camera from Japanese company Superheadz never needs to be plugged in.

With its retro-style appearance, this camera looks like many of the basic analogs that are coming back into style during the digital age, like Polaroids and Holgas. But it’s capable of shooting both video and stills, and a built-in solar panel and hand-crank mechanism make it easy to charge, no matter where you are.

The 3-megapixel lens shoots in three modes: normal, portrait and macro. An LED light illuminates night shots. Compatible with standard digital photo technology, the Sun and Cloud uses a micro SD or SDHC card. And if your arm gets tired and the sun’s not out, you can charge it up the ‘old-fashioned’ way with a USB cable. It’s available at AC Gears for $199.
