Who Goes Thera?
Santorini (formerly known as Thera) is an island in the Aegean Sea that was once home to a thriving Bronze Age civilization before a massive volcanic eruption put a sudden, violent end to all that. These days, Santorini is a popular tourism destination famed for scenic views and spectacular vistas. In short, the perfect place to fly a… DOH! Do Leave Home Without It
We’ve become attuned to the usual red, white and black graphics on “NO Whatever” signs, so kudos to Jefferson County, Colorado for thinking outside the diagonally-striped box. After all, when it comes to getting people’s attention, “It’s the law” is unsurprisingly effective. (no drones sign image via TheTurducken)
Flights Templer
Visitors to Todai-ji temple should temper their expectations; this vertically-oriented No Drone Zone sign seeks to zap remote-controlled UAVs with zen subtlety. Todai-ji temple (“Eastern Great Temple”) is a Buddhist temple complex located in the city of Nara, Japan. It opened in 752 CE and the 14.98 m (49 ft 2 in) tall bronze Daibutsu statue within weighs approximately 500 tons. Would an errant drone crashing onto the temple roof invite bad karma? You break it, you Buddha it. (no drones sign image via shankar s.)
Squeamish in Squamish
Welcome to scenic Shannon Falls Provincial Park in Squamish, British Columbia, where everyone is more than welcome to hike the trails, enjoy rock climbing, camp out, picnic and other recreational activities that do not involve the use of drones.
And they do mean everyone… even that teeny tiny lady speechifying at the miniature podium or lectern built into the top of a wooden No Drones sign. She can probably drone on just fine without any remote controlled assistance. (no drones sign image via Robin Monks)
Rushmore; Droneless
Did you know you can’t fly drones at Mount Rushmore National Memorial? You do now… and you would then, if you had read the sign above. We really can’t fathom why an enormous sculpture carved from solid granite needs protection from drones, not to mention pets and smokers, and… wait, yes we can, thanks to 36 CFR 1.5 Closures & Public Limits designed to ameliorate noise and nuisance complaints from park visitors. Not to drone on but… silence is golden, drones are not. (no drones sign image via Kevin Baird)
