At 15 meters (49.2 feet) tall and 18 meters (almost 60 feet) long, the red-painted metal monster was completed just in time for the Sixth Annual Qianjiang Lobster Festival. A pity it isn’t edible but we’ll presume at least that it’s been rustproofed.

To say the gigantic clawed crawler has attracted notice would be an understatement – even the folks at Guinness World Records got into the act, recognizing the installation as the world’s largest statue of a crustacean. Hopefully the runners-up aren’t overly, er, crabby as a result.

While Qianjiang’s Lobster Festival comes and goes (unlike the region’s crayfish, which have for the most part gone), it would seem the colossal crayfish statue is here to stay… hey, YOU try moving a hundred-tons of welded steel! What’s next for the gentle people of Qianjiang? Might we suggest the world’s largest pot of hot butter?
