You’ll find the Portlandia MAiZE on Sauvie Island, about 10 miles north of Portland, Oregon. While not as outstanding as other corn mazes who feel the need to shoot for the stars year after year, the Portlandia MAiZE does everything right in moderation.
The Portlandia MAiZE, or simply “The MAiZE” for short, has been a tradition since 1999. Opening just after Labor Day, The MAiZE takes a turn (quite a few turns, if truth be told) for the worse – in a good way, of course – on October weekends with their famously frightening Haunted MAiZE.

As harvest time often coincides with Halloween, it’s no surprise many farmers add a little fright when their corn’s of sufficient height. Take Rogers Family Orchard in Johnstown, NY for example. The spine-tingling image above was taken at the farm’s Haunted Orchard and Corn Maze, a two-week-long event organized and operated by some 50 local students and parent volunteers. Michael Myers, a leather-faced man wielding a chainsaw and worst of all… clowns, all “encourage” maze-goers to find their way out before it’s too late!
