This Dog Waste Bin from Eki Kranj of Slovenia may look like someone’s idea of an East Bloc highrise doghouse but Fido’d better look before he leaps… if not, at least he’ll have a soft landing. The powder-coated and post-mounted box features an integral bin lock “for the purpose of withstanding vandalism.” Evidently disturbing the feces is against the law in Slovenia.

The standard red dog waste bin at the Bolehill Recreational Ground in Crookes, Sheffield, UK might be rather ordinary and uninteresting in isolation but Flickr user Paul Cantrell has a way of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. The exquisite images above highlight Cantrell’s flair for scenic composition and his skillful way of melding the magnificent with the mundane.

Dog waste disposal bins are a relatively new addition to our familiar public spaces and while many think their presence is long overdue, others are having a tough time recognizing them for what they are thanks to some astoundingly poor design sense. Take the case of Alf, a 91-year-old pensioner from Australia who couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t getting replies from the friends, family members and businesses he was mailing letters to. Turns out poor Alf had been putting his outgoing mail in the red “dog poo box” instead of the red mailbox across the street. DOH! Of course, had his letters been delivered it’s doubtful the aggrieved recipients would have replied anyway.
