Putting plants into unexpected places – or “guerrilla gardening” – is an eye-catching form of green graffiti. Heather Powazek Champ combines guerrilla gardening with yarn bombing in her awesome new project: Plant Pockets. The cute little pockets hold plants securely, giving them new homes in urban areas.
The colorful little pockets are made of acrylic yarn to stave off rot and hold the low-maintenance plants securely. Although Heather didn’t have a wealth of knitting experience when she began the project, she refined her technique by knitting more and more of the small pouches.
Placing small amounts of dirt and hardy plants in the pockets resulted in miniature gardens that could be placed almost anywhere a bit of sunshine and unexpected beauty was needed. The duo behind the cute idea hung several of the little pockets in San Francisco, undoubtedly bringing smiles to the faces of passers-by.
