While the color blue is most at home on the dessert plate, there are times when things just don’t work out regardless of the server’s best intentions – even if that server is a large corporation that should know better. Take the Swedish Flag Roll Cake served at some IKEA restaurants in Japan… go ahead, take it, IF YOU CAN.

OK, so the last time we saw cake this blue, it was moldy enough to top-up the world’s penicillin stocks three times over. Maybe that’s why most folks avoid tinting baked goods blue or green. IKEA Japan isn’t most folks, though, and evidently the concept of a Swedish Flag Cake made from Blueberry-flavored sponge cake interspersed with yellow mango cream was too much to resist.

Blue Udon Noodles

Blue noodles… just because, that’s why. At least the broth is naturally un-tinted so let’s all thank goodness for small blessings before we slurp.

Pepsi Blue Hawaii

Inspired perhaps by the eminently forgettable Elvis Presley flick Blue Hawaii, Pepsi Blue Hawaii combined the tastes of pineapple and lemon but mysteriously tinted the soda those summery fruits’ opposite color. The result resembled two summery things one should NEVER drink: mouthwash and pool water.
