Aichi Prefecture, Anjo City, Japan

In Japan, the hot sun can turn concrete buildings into huge, uncomfortable ovens. To make the building more comfortable and cut down on energy costs, the Aichi Prefecture building in Anjo City decided to install massive “green curtains” of vegetation to insulate the building from the hot sun. Each of the five curtains covering the east side of the building is six meters wide and 16 meters tall. They cover the balconies on that side of the building, making them a little more private for users.
