"Load-bearing walls are made using old automobile-tires packed tightly with rammed earth, or cob, as it’s known."

Actually, cob is made of 3 ingredients: clay, sand and straw. So it's not merely earth as this sentence implies. The combination of the 3 makes a strong bond and can stand on its own, whereas just plain "earth" needs to be contained by something, like the tires (... packed into temporary forms at least). And by the way, apparently, people have since discovered that the tires leach toxins into the soil unfortunately. I guess that is why the original EarthShip guy seems to be promoting the use of "earthbags" now instead.

Anyway, yeah, amazing beautiful designs in those photos!

Such inspiring photos! It's truly beautiful. I think earth homes are particularly grounding to be inside too. Thanks for the details on the outer walls vs inner walls - their construction and materials. Really inspiring article and photos.

Great article! We are also busy with an earthship project in South-Africa see http://www.aardskip.com.

Any volunteers who love to come and help build an earthship information center in Africa is welcome. Tips is also welcome.
